The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms located at 103 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville has just taken out the Coffee Shop/Tea House category in the South Australia Savour Australia™ Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence 2015, rising like a good crema to the top from a field of more than 270 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses across 62 categories. Now that’s something to savour along with the ambience and reason for you to drop by for a coffee next time you’re in the area.
Along with Graham & Jane Garforth we are just as thrilled they have won the award. Being a new business, The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms offers a unique experience, bringing the era of grace, elegance and charm to Walkerville.
The Awards for Excellence is a nationally recognised, independently judged awards program that celebrates exceptional service and culinary talent across Australia.
But what makes this place so special…
You know, there’s tradition, and then there’s tradition. For us, that means there’s the coffee, and then there’s the sharing. So we love the way the Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms delivers Cirelli Coffee amidst the ambience of another age, when tables wore lace and crystal, and elegance was the watchword of the day.
It’s a fun place to be, and it’s like stepping out of time to come through the door into another era (except for the coffee machine, which is seriously modern). Graham and Jane Garforth have created a little world of dainty charm to feed the soul. And most of the pretty china, fine furniture and ornaments is actually for sale, should the collecting bug bite while you’re there.
There’s so much going on too – more than luscious freshly baked scones and cakes served on fine china and a breakfast and lunch menu based on the finest style of English cuisine (celery and stilton soup, anyone?) They have a great BLT sandwich which goes down a treat for lunch, as well as the Fresh Fruit Fridays, when the Garforth’s own fruit trees are raided for the makings of such treats as orange syrup cake, and you can also grab a piece of fresh fruit to go. Or zero in on those gluten free brownies and be done with it.
And where else can you unleash your inner Downton Abbey persona at a period supper night or take the place over for a private high tea? Any excuse to dust off a good appetite, and maybe a vintage outfit as well works for Graham and Jane. Special event bookings fill fast though so keep a close eye on their Facebook page for what’s coming up.
So with all this going on, how about the coffee? We’ve created an exclusive custom blend for the Tea Rooms, a well-balanced blend that boasts an earthy aroma and a deep full-bodied flavour for a leisurely morning sip and great afternoon pick-me-up. It’s an overall smooth cup with subtle dark cocoa flavours. And of course it’s had the Cirelli touch, being inspected repeatedly before, during and after roasting to make sure all is right every sip of the way.
For those on the go, there is also a coffee window down the driveway side that only needs to be tapped once for a quick action ‘latte’ and ‘cappuccino’ on the run. For those in the know, tapping the window gets you a double shot rather than a single. I know what I’ll be doing…
If you have a little more time you can relax out the back in their secret little garden. Whilst the front looks like a small café, out the back there is enough space and seating for a small party or function. This is sure to offer a great spot when things heat-up.
This classic tradition is what The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms brings. Whether its breakfast, lunch, or a cup of tea, they aim to provide a distinctly different charming experience in there cosy location on Walkerville Terrace.
So whether you fancy a Downton Abbey night or a Fresh Fruit Friday, one thing for sure is that you’ll find great Cirelli Coffee anytime at The Old Curiosity Shop & Tea Rooms located at 103 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville.
To celebrate their win, just remember – Tuesdays in October will get you ’10 % discount on all food and beverage (non-alcoholic)’ purchases upon presentation of the voucher and a knock at the ‘Coffee Window’ will hit you with a double shot of caffeine.
